Online SMBs see 41 percent of turnover from web

Small businesses with an online presence reap almost half their average turnover from the internet, according to study by Telstrawww.telstra.com.au and the Council of Small Business of Australia (COSBOA).
The study of 1000 small businesses found that of the 36 percent of small businesses with a website, six in ten (63 percent) are selling products or services online.
According to the study’s authors, it “validates anecdotal evidence that Australian small business is much more nimble in seizing online opportunities than the top end of town.”
“It also showed the sector saw the broader use of technology as critical to their business success.”
Telstra Executive Director Small Business Charles Agee said a shift in the way local business operates is occurring, and small to business businesses are leading the way.

“While there’s been much debate about online shoppers buying products overseas, the move online by small Australian retailers and service-based companies has developed from a ripple into a wave.”

The Telstra Business-COSBOA research also found:

Almost seven in ten (67 percent) small businesses with a website regard it as important or very important;
The proportion of turnover online is strongest in the Transport and Storage (55.4 percent), Accommodation, Cafes, Restaurant and Travel (53.8 percent) and Retail (52.3 percent) segments of small business;
Internet commerce uptake is higher in regional-based small businesses (67 percent) than those in metropolitan areas (62 percent);
More SMEs in Queensland (43 percent) have an online presence than any other state, with NSW (39 percent) and Tasmania, NT and ACT (37 percent) not far behind.

Agee said it’s clear the small business industry has recognised the importance of broader technology to help them achieve their business objectives.
“Communications and ICT services are seen as either very important or important for the day to day for 85 percent of the small business.”
Of those businesses planning to spend more this year, 42 percent plan to spend on ICT, with the drivers being to upgrade to newer technology, increase productivity and enhance customer service. Other big areas of expenditure are marketing (46 percent) and plant and equipment (45 percent).
“The research also shows 89 percent of small businesses see work life balance as very important or important. Earlier research shows there is a clear link between both issues, with technology such as smart phones, tablets and wireless broadband being an enabler of more flexible working,” Agee added.

Why perfection sucks

The following negative ways of thinking are frequently observed in unhappy people, according to cognitive psychologists. Do any of these sound familiar?

1. I need other people to like me and approve of me.

2. It doesn't matter how hard you try, if luck is against you, you won't succeed.

3. If I have to make a choice, it is important to be sure I make the best choice.

4. It is important to do all things competently.

I think it’s easy to see how 1 and 2 would lead to dissatisfaction, but 3 and 4 are harder to grasp. They both look quite positive on first glance, but who can possibly know what the ‘best choice’ is prior to making it? Who can do all things competently?

Striving yet inevitably falling short (thoughts 3 and 4) is a sure fire recipe for unhappiness. Still such thinking seems prevalent within our society, particularly amongst perfectionists.

I always hated that idea that you should say “Ooh, I’m a perfectionist” when asked what your faults were in a job interview. What an unimaginative, deflective answer. Oh, and it’s a lie.

It’s not hard for me to mount an argument against perfectionism. I operate under a ‘near enough is good enough’ policy when it comes to work, mothering and tending to my appearance. Just ask my colleagues, kids and John-Paul.

Ambition means little to me. I tend to think “I’m glad I’m not…” rather than “I wish I were…” I am really aware of my faults. These include, but are by no means limited to dismissiveness, laziness and an inability to scramble eggs.

But because self acceptance means more to me than self improvement, I don’t really dwell on my limitations.

And I’m not being funny, and I’m sorry if this sounds smug, but I am a really happy person.

Stephanie Dowrick recounts a tale whereby she was in a room full of people anguishing over their limitations. She went up to each individual and told them “You are enough.” The restorative nature of that simple statement was immediately evident.

Perfection does not feature in nature, where there are no straight lines. Recently on the radio, I heard Stephen Hawkins eloquently explain how after the big bang, imperfections within the universe meant gravity could take hold and life itself could begin.

So why strive for perfection?

The prosecution rests its case. I’ll happily call further witnesses or hear from defendants of perfectionism.

Special thanks to Peter whose piece on why failure matters inspired this article. Peter doesn’t mind me taking his moderate and thoughtful ideas and running with them to the boundaries of acceptability. It’s kind of a thing we have.

Hi all, here some great tips for all of you wanting to market your business without spending to much money.

Google maps- Now everybody is using I Phone and like other brands for their business (and everything else) being on Google Maps is a must if you want your business to be found. Make sure you also embed a google map of your business on your website, so that you are as visible as possible. Being on Google Maps will also increase your rankings with Google

Email Marketing and SMS Marketing. We all have great data bases at our disposal right? We have them on our email address books, phone contacts, MYOB Customer lists etc. By using the digital network we are able to communicate industry information, sales offers, company updates, frequent buyer programmes etc.

Ensure that your information within your emails or sms are to the point and relevant. Ensure also that you only send to clients who wish to be emailed. Put a note on the bottom that enables the client to opt out at any time.

Regularity is the name of the game and you should plan via your computer calendar items that you would like to communicate to your data base. This will ensure that you remember to and get in the habit of sending these communications on a regular basis.

Leads Clubs- Join a local Leads or Business Networking Group. This is a great way of spreading the word to many people. Most States and Cities have a group near you. These clubs run in the following way, a breakfast meeting once a week or fortnight. Each member gives a 30 second run down of what they do. Each member gives a summary of business leads they have passed onto fellow members. A different member gives a 20minute talk at every meeting and answers questions from the members. Another 30 second explanation of your business closes the meeting.

This is a great way of spreading the word. Each member knows hundreds of other people in business, friends and family. They recommend you and you recommend them. The lead they give you then have their contacts and so on.

Many long lasting friendships, and business relationships begin this way and I have found that this type of group is possibly the best form of advertising that we have been involved in.

Testimonials-are a great way of having existing clients detail their positive experiences with your company to their clients and to many potential clients. Include you testimonials on your web site for everyone to visit and to read. There is no better endorsement of your company than the positive experiences of your current clients.

If you are really clever you can video the testimonial and embed that on your site. This is even better as your potential clients can look into the eyes of your happy customer and get a real feel for their excitement and satisfaction.

Tracking-How many of you have a web site but have no idea of how many people visit your site, how they found their way to your site, how long they spent on your site etc>? Google Analytics is a great way of finding out much of this information and it is also free!!!!!

Pay Per Click Advertising- This is almost a must now and it is also a form of advertising where you only pay when someone visits you advertisement. See advertising on social networking groups like Facebook for more information.

If we are not tracking our advertising campaigns, or monitoring our web sites etc then we are all missing out on must have information!!!! We can all spend a lot of money on web sites, printing, advertising campaigns, but if that is where it starts and stops we are doing our businesses a real injustice.

Coromandel Ramblers Match 2 Report

The CVRCC A grade boys started the ball rolling nicely in game 2. After being washed out in week 1 our boys fronted at Hawthorndene Oval against our nemisis Western Youth in a one day fixture. After an early wicket veteran Dave Benson 47 and stand in captain Josh Haussen steadied the ship. After a 60 run partnership Haussen departed the scene and an all to familiar Ramblers collapse followed. Only Gormlie and Veroude chimed in late in the inning to see the Ramblers through to 133. This total should have been within the reach of Western Youth however a devastating opening bowling combination of Caleb Blesing 5 for 24 and Jeff Stanley 4 for 18 ripped the heart out of a meek WY batting attack. A great effort by our boys that sees CVRCC fill top place with 2 wins and 0 losses.

The B grade fronted to Southern at Serpentine Reserve, where CVRCC, thanks to Kingsley Smith with 5 wickets held Southern to a modest 173. Sean Conlon and Leigh Porter opened the innings with the words of the skipper ring in their ears, "do not invent shots play with in your limitations and see us to 60 runs with no loss. That they did with Conlon 47 and Porter 21 falling quickly after reaching the 60 runs. Jono Hilditch followed quickly and it was left to Benson and Davenport to see the innings through to drinks. With 30 overs left 90 runs were required and it wasn't until 2 runs before the victory that benson fell on 31. Davenport remained not out on 59 as the Ramblers banked its second pre-Christmas victory in a row. We must now consolidate with a win against Cove in round three. The B grade are in third place with a very handy quotient.

The C grade sadly were never in the contest at Weymouth Oval against a very good ICC Shark outfit. Chasing a mammoth 334 the Ramblers were bowled out still 200 runs shy for 134. Only the father and son combination of Brett Chilton 25 and Ben Chilton 34 put up any real resistance to the ICC attack. Restricting runs next week will be a priority for the C grade. The C grade are now anchored to the base of the table with 0 wins and 2 losses.

The D grade played out a nail biter at Kenilworth Oval against Adelaide Cavaliers. Our boys posted an average 198, but were out 7 and a bit overs from the end of the day and this gave the cavaliers a huge advantage. After a brisk start the Ramblers took some quick middle order wickets, however it was not quite enough as the Cavaliers reached 9/200 to win by just one wicket. Higgins shone with the ball taking 3 for 39, Pownceby was handy with 2 for 20 and Eitzen made it a good double by taking 2 for 29 to add to his 44 runs. A good effort by the lads but it shows why we all need to bat our full compliment of overs. Another 7 overs of batting would have won CVRCC the game. The D grade are in fifth place with 1 win and 1 loss.

Lets see everyone get to practice this week to work on our game. There is a huge improvement to be had in all grades whether it be in batting bowling or fielding.

Weekend's Cricket

A pretty wet week meant that many games did not get away this weekend. The A grade CVRCC boys turned up to Hawthorndene only to be confronted with a wash out. Their game will revert to the one day format next weekend.

The B grade ventured down to Serpentine Reserve to play Southern to find perfect conditions and a well drained oval. Southern got away to a good start and were only 2 down for 93 at drinks and poised to post a big score. What they didn't factor on was Kingo Smith taking 5 for 47 after the break. A huge effort by our quick. New chum Josh Putland bowling his leggies chimed in with 3 for 29 and shows huge promise for a very young man. Southern ended the day with a moderate 173. The Ramblers will need to show the same gritty determination as week one to get over a determined Southern outfit.

Coromandel Valley Ramblers C Grade were smashed from one end of the oval to the other and did not help themselves by dropping a double digit amount of catches. Much work must be done at practice on our fielding to support our competent bowling line up. Sam Davenport with 2 for 93 was the only shining light with the ball. What could have been with 5 catches going down off his bowling alone. Southern finished the day at 7 for 334.

The D grade boys played Adelaide Cavaliers 2 at Kenilworth and made a handy 198 runs although they failed to bat out their overs. This gave Cavaliers a few bonus overs and by days end had replied with 1 for 36 off only five overs. Our fourth team will need to bowl tightly next Saturday to achieve victory. Batsmen who made an impression on the day were club legend Malcolm Lincoln with 47,Eitzen with 44 and Pownceby with 38. No one was able to turn their start into the big innings required.

Lets make sure we get out and support all the Ramblers teams next week. Early results can make or break teams in their bids to qualify for the finals.

Coromandel Ramblers Cricket Club

A very good start to the season for the Ramblers boys with the A grade, B grade and D grade all getting off to a winning start and the C grade narrowly beaten, on the weekend. A one day game held in perfect conditions kicked off the 2010/2011 season.

Winners of the new player of the match awards supplied by new sponsor Mount Lofty Golf Club are from the A Grade- Matthew Smith who scored 69 and continues his rise in reputation as one of the competitions leading all-rounders. The C grade provide the other winner with veteran Mark Chief Withers taking 2/20 in a containing spell.

Next week the B and D graders will be in the gun for the Mount Lofty Golf Club Player of the round awards.

Many thanks to Mount Lofty Golf Club for there support of our Cricket Club. We would encourage all members to show their support in return by chosing Mt Lofty as their course of choice for a round of golf.

With so many attending cricket practice spots in the teams are at a premium and in return will improve the quality of cricket played by members I am sure.

Happy Valley Football Club Finals

Well what a great effort it was last Saturday morning. HVFC were triumphant in thrashing Flagstaff Hill down at Higginbottom Stadium Noarlunga.

Flaggy started with purpose and cleared out their forward 50 creating one on one footy and raced away to lead 3 goals to one at quarter time. In his usual laid back style, Mick Ruddock reminded the boys they were on the board and in the game, just play your game and everything will be ok. Ok it was as Flaggies only added one more goal for the rest of the game.

After a poor first quarter Ryan Doherty was best on gound in a stunning display. Ryan found is own ball and took the game on breaking lines and delivering to the Happy Valley forwards. Sam Farmer won the Westies zone medal and shows a lot of promise. It was a real team game but those to catch the eye included Brinni, Hastwell, Low, Collins, Vick etc.

This was a great year for the lads and a premiership well deserved. Unlike previous years where the "best team, in the best positions" were fielded week in week out, Mick and Liam rotated the boys from not playing to the Saturday and Sunday sides. Over 60 players were available this year for our under 14's. Players this year were also encouraged to play in a higher grade for a couple of weeks at a time to provide the lads with a little experience for next season. The lads also played in many different positions, giving them all a taste of how to play in defense, attack and around the ball. Mick was happy to go in a little light some weeks and in doing so the team found themselves in fifth spot at one stage before their stunning last month where they finished second.

Well done to Mick Ruddock, Liam Sutton, Bev Smelt, Dwayne Ruddock and John Westphalen for a great year. Not only did we win this premiership but the Sunday team also played off in the grand final and were level with the mighty Brighton team at 3/4 time before sucumbing to the pressure and the conditions.

Go you Vikings.

SA Police are proud to once again be putting on Ride Like Crazy 2011 on Sunday the 16th of January 2011. This event is SAPOL's major fundraiser and this year supports Neurosurgical Research Foundation and Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, two very worth charities indeed.

Ride Like Crazy also honours the memory of Senior Sergeant Mick Crazy Koerner who died of an inoperable brain tumour in 2009. (Read about history by clicking on our link).

Preliminary Final Day

HVFC Under 16s Win 1st Semi Final

Saturday September 4th at Aldinga Football Club saw Happy Valley Under 16's get up by 2 points in an enthralling SFL 1st Semi Final.

In fine and windy conditions which made scoring difficult, Happy Valley outlasted Brighton in a classic final. Boys on both sides gave their all with Happy Valley prevailing. We have now extended our season by at least one more week when we meet Cove Football Club in the 2nd Preliminary Final at Port Noarlunga on Saturday the 11th of September at 9.30am.

It is just so great to see our boys many of them first year under 16's develop their skills, their sense of team play and carry out the game plan as they have over the past few weeks. This final was as close to a concentrated four quarter effort as they have played all year. With their effort the results are starting to fall our way.

As Allan Stringer so rightly put it last night at presentations, all this win has done is to give us the right to contest our next game avainst the Cobra's. By all means we will not get ahead of ourselves but get back to training on Tuesday night and work hard in preperation for the weekends game.

This was a great effort, having gone down twice to Brighton during the season, but gaining on them each time, the boys showed just how far they have developed and how much they needed to and have lifted their work rate. Their team play has been very good over the past two weeks, but will need to keep improving as we progress deeper into the finals series.

Special efforts were given all day from many players. A few ripper moments were Matthew Raitt's commitment to a 50/50 ball. He sprinted with eyes only for it, puched it forward out of the Brighton players grasp and continued on to get the ball again, turning a sure Brighton attack into a HVFC attack. Sam Bauers defensive action on Howie. Sam did not give him a sniff all day and required supreme discipline. Scott Kumnick and Todd Eshmade's work in the forward line, continually leading and taking hard marks and creating bone crunching contests. Beardy rucking all day and being disciplined enough to play the kick behind the play and to mop up many Brighton attacks. Beardy put body on the line in the last quarter with a great spoil over the boundary line taking the Brighton body with him. James Sexton's reading of the play and sure hands in defense and cool disposal. Tristan Cummings coming on off the bench and exploding with pace, taking marks and contesting against taller bigger bodies, and Jack Mesecke continuing to do all the hard things that win games of football.

I could go on and on, but it was the team effort that won the game for us. Now we turn to next week and we ensure that we prepare well, we are disciplined during the week and on Friday night and we take the same attitude into the preliminary final.

Corporate/Club Clothing and Promotional Gifts Guide

When promoting your business by having your staff wear branded clothing or by giving your clients or members, promotional gifts etc, take some time to decide what outcome it is that you wish to achieve.

Things to consider is the budget that you wish to allocate to the promotion of your organisation using these methods, the time frame that you have to organise products for your event or promotion.

Clothing can now be screen printed, embroidered or sublimated. Each of these methods has a cost involved and a time it takes to either decorate or manufacture. Each method has its own place in the industry and will be suitable or not suitable for your requirements. For instance a major promotion where a company is handing out many many hundreds of tee shirts would be best catered for by screen printing as the costs will be kept quite low, where as providing polo shirts with many sponsors logos attached would now see sublimation as the decoration of choice.

As a rule embroidery and screen printing will take approximately 2 weeks from artwork approval. Sublimated products will take anything from 4- 8 weeks as the garment is individually designed and manufactured for purpose.

When considering promotional gifts you must also consider pricing, relevance to your requirements and decorating time. It is a very stressful process when a client rings asking for products three days out from an event!!!! Not only for the promotions company but also for the organiser. Like anything when planning your promotion give yourself plenty of time and ensure that you not only choose the right products but have the products there in time for your event or promotion.

Happy Valley Football Club Finals Under 16

For those of you who don't know, I am coaching the under 16 group at Happy Valley Football Club with Steve Chapman.
The last minor round saw our boys go down gallantly to Brighton Football Club who were sitting in equal top position. It was a grand effort by the lads only let down by a poor start that saw Brighton kick 3 goals in the first 15 minutes. From then on HVFC won the day but couldn't quite breach the gap. As we discussed as a predominately first year team, we need to concentrate and sustain a four quarter team game if we are to go deeper into September. A couple of special mentions to two of the boys who were given big jobs on the day. Sam Bauer was entrusted with keeping Brendan Howie (36 goals for the year) in check at centre half forward and he did a really good job, forsaking his own game to negate Brendan. Rhys Barrett, went back to full back releasing Josh Peters into the centre of the ground. Rhys manned up on Mitchell Howie (who had booted 60 plus goals for the year). Rhys was able to stop Mitchell adding to that total and provided us with much rebound all day. Others to play well on the day were Peters (Best on Ground)Spacie, Raitt, Tate, Beard, Sexton, Eshmade (3 goals).

On Sunday our team played the first final against Morphett Vale and despite having about 75% of the play all day, continued to butcher their possessions and not put score on the board. Morphett Vale had a purple patch of approximately 6 minutes in the third quarter with the wind where they put 3 goals on the board and threatened to blow the game apart. However whilst giving our coaches and supporters plenty to worry about the boys plugged away to finally goal with a minute to go and seal the victory by 4 points. This ensures Happy Valley a spot in the preliminary final next weekend. This was a gutsy win and showed what a team effort can provide for the club. It was also the third come from behind victory in recent weeks. Best players on the day were Aiden Chaplain, Jack Mesecke, Tristan Cummings, Ryan Doherty, Alex Nicholson, Daniel Bennetts.

We now look forward to an elimination final for our Saturday team and a preliminary final for our Sunday team. With players injured, playing under 18 and at West Adelaide we have struggled to get our most settled side on the park for most of the year, and with SFL regulations that seem to defy logic and common sense, and injuries in teams above us it appears nothing will change this weekend. The boys picked will need to be well prepared, well rested, focused and ready to commit and concentrate on working as a team for four quarters if we are to move further into finals action.

All the best to the club and all the teams competing in finals this weekend. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers particularly our regular staff Michael, Ross, Dean, Brad, David, for the huge efforts and sacrifices that you have made for the club, our boys and for me and Chappy this season, without you guys there is simply no team, and it highly appreciated.

Ride Like Crazy

Hi all, Souvenir Scene is proud to be associated once again with Ride Like Crazy, Sunday the 16th of January2011.
The event was started to honour Senior Sergeant Mick "Crazy" Koerner of the South Australia Police who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. His work colleagues and friends established a cycling event called Ride Like Crazy.
The event which started off as just a few colleagues and friends going for a ride to raise money for Mick's family, quickly gained momentum and in the end over 600 joined in.
SAPOL recognised the opportunity to make the event an annual event now raising money for Neuro surgical research and for The Women's and Children's Hospital.
In 2010 the event attracted almost 2000 participants raising an amazing $160,000.00 for the designated charities.
2011 will see numbers attending this very well organised event swell even further and raise even more money for charities in need.
Souvenir Scene will once again produce the merchandise for the event. Participants intending to ride in the event will be able to try riding jersey's on at our showroom from early September.
To everyone concerned we hope the ride is even more successful than the last and look forward providing our readers with updates over the next few months leading up to the event.

Football Finals Approach

Hi everyone, well September approaches and all Happy Valley Football Club teams have made the finals which start for some this week and for others next week.

I would like to congratulate the club and the committee for the above outstanding achievement and wish all of the players, coaches, support staff and volunteers all the best for the coming few weeks. Finals are the start of a new sub season and anything can happen. The fact that HVFC have put itself in a position to contest the finals in all grades is a credit to all involved.

Lets make sure that supporters get to all grounds on Saturday's and Sunday's allocated to our teams and get behind the lads as we strive for a premiership or two.

For our under 16 boys, it is a great opportunity as a mainly first year team to give the other teams in the finals series a bit of a shake. It is also a great opportunity to gani experience in finals and to prepare for next season, where the team will all be a bit older and wiser. Prepare well and let us give it our best shot.

Australia Tops Advertising Creativity List

A new list has placed Australia, then New Zealand, at the top of the advertising creativity rankings for the Asia Pacific region. And Sydney has been named as the fifth best advertising city on the planet.
The ranking has been compiled by the Cannes Lions Festival, based on trophies from its June competition.

According to The Cannes Report, Australia was fourth globally with 45 Lions, with New Zealand 11th with 21.

Among the Australasian agencies in the Asia Pacific top ten were CummingsNitro Brisbane, Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney, Leo Burnett Sydney, Saatchi & Saatchi Auckland, Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and BMF Sydney.

In the cities rankings, Sydney is fifth in the world, with Auckland 8th. London was top."

Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club Life Members and Past Players Dinner

What a great night this will be when all of the Coromandel Valley Ramblers past players and life members get together tonight at the Blackwood RSL. Many players wont have seen each other for a long time, but there is one thing you can be sure of the stories about past exploits will have only got larger!!!!

Daryl Harper is the guest speaker and he is an absolute ripper with so many stories about life on the road as an elite umpire and a few about his day as a Rambler. We all know players who cant play umpire!!!! Only kidding Daryl.

Past and Present Players Night.

April 28th, 2010 The Past and Present Players Night will once again occur in the cricket off-season, with the guest speaker being none other than a former Rambler and current ICC International Umpire, Mr. Daryl Harper. This night presents an opportunity to listen to what an international umpire gets up to on his tours of the world whilst also catching up with your cricket mates in a social atmosphere before the season begins. City To Bay Fun Run 2010

Hi all, well the City to Bay Fun Run for 2010 is almost upon us once again!!!! For many people they have given it little thought and for many they have been training for months.

At Promotion Scene, we have a whole heap of specials on running singlets for this event. Ranging from cotton singlets $6.80 plus GST to Polycotton singlets at $14.75 plus GST.

We also offer embroidery and screen printing to decorate your garment in your logo, team name or just put across a message. Allow two weeks for these processes.
